Scientists at Newcastle University have created Britain’s first human-animal hybrid embryos for research by transferring the DNA from a human cell into a cow’s egg whose nucleus had been removed, it emerged on Tuesday night.
The disclosure is certain to stir further controversy as MPs prepare to debate legislation that would specifically allow the creation of hybrid embryos. Gordon Brown bowed to pressure from senior Catholics last week and agreed to allow his party a free vote on the issue next month.
