Dollar plunges as US waits for rate cut

The dollar plunged to record lows Monday as fears over the state of the US financial system triggered a fresh wave of selling.

The dollar fell to record lows against the euro and Swiss franc and its weakest level since 1995 against the yen as news that Bear Stearns, the distressed US investment bank, had been bought by rival JPMorgan Chase sparked renewed fears over the extent of damage wrought by the credit crisis.
