A French criminal investigation has been launched into alleged market abuses by Sacyr Vallehermoso and Luis del Rivero, its chairman, opening a new chapter in the Spanish construction group’s bitter two-year battle for board seats at French rival Eiffage.

The company on Wednesday confirmed reports that Sacyr and Mr Del Rivero had been placed under formal criminal investigation for providing false information to the French stock market.
