Sony and Sharp in LCD TV plant tie-up

Sony is set to invest nearly $1bn in rival Sharp's newest liquid crystal display factory in a bid to meet growing demand for flat-panel televisions and diversify its supply chain.

Sony said yesterday it would take a one-third stake in Sharp's $3.5bn LCD panel plant in western Japan, which is to be the biggest in the world. Sharp will own 66 per cent of the venture.
