House of Fraser defies gloom

House of Fraser yesterday produced solid half-year results, increasing hopes that an improving performance could provide the launch pad for department store consolidation.

People familiar with Baugur, the Icelandic investment group that is the lead shareholder in HoF, said the company and its partners had recently renewed their interest in acquiring Debenhams, the UK department store chain, and Saks, its US peer.
