Tokyo to recognise Ainu

Japan’s parliament is poised to pass a resolution on Friday that will for the first time recognise the existence of an indigenous ethnic minority in the country and acknowledge past mistreatment of the group.

The resolution, which has the support of all parties in an otherwise deadlocked legislature, calls the Ainu, who live on Hokkaido island and other northern parts of Japan, “an indigenous people possessing a unique language, religion and culture”.
