The bid approach to Abbot Group is the latest sign of a consolidation wave sweeping North Sea oil and gas service companies.

The high price of oil, which touched record levels last month, has pushed up the value of companies in the sector and attracted the interest of venture capital groups such as 3i, which has approached Abbot.
