President Nicolas Sarkozy addressed French troops mourning the death of 10 comrades in Kabul on Wednesday and told them that France’s continued involvement in Afghanistan was “essential to the freedom of the world”.

He flew into the Afghan capital with his foreign and defence ministers the day after France suffered its biggest loss of soldiers for 25 years.
