Wall Street falls amid credit fears

US stocks fell sharply on Monday after Goldman Sachs warned that Citigroup could be forced to make $15bn in credit-related writedowns and told investors to sell the shares.

Investors were also unsettled by an analyst’s comment that Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored mortgage agency, may have to recognise big losses on a subprime portfolio.
