Brown compromises on embryo research

Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, tried to defuse a growing dispute between the government and the Catholic church over stem-cell research on Tuesday by offering parliamentarians of his ruling Labour party a free vote on some controversial aspects of a forthcoming bill on the subject.

Mr Brown believes that the human fertilisation and embryology bill, which has wide support among scientists, will help those seeking cures for ailments ranging from cancer to Parkinson’s disease.
