The west is struggling in the ideological battle against radical Islam and has failed to provide an effective response to extremist propaganda, the US said on Wednesday.

In its annual report on global terrorism, released on Wednesday by the state department, the US highlighted al-Qaeda’s increased propaganda effort and said Ayman al-Zawahiri, the organisation’s number two, had emerged as its strategic and operational chief.
