Italy Senate chief seeks interim team

Italy’s small parties will be in the spotlight on Thursday when Franco Marini, speaker of the Senate, asks for their support in forming an interim government, with the mandate to introduce changes to the electoral system that could spell their political doom.

Mr Marini was asked on Wednesday night by Giorgio Napolitano, Italy’s president, to try to break the deadlock following the collapse of Romano Prodi’s centre-left government last week.
