HBOS blames crunch for falling margin

HBOS on Wednesday blamed the global credit squeeze and the subsequent rising cost of wholesale funding for a sharp decline in profitability at its retail bank and a fall in its profit margin.

The bank saw pre-tax profits fall 4 per cent to £5.47bn in 2007 against £5.7bn in the previous year.
