Another disappointing sporting fixture for Sir Fred Goodwin as the RBS-sponsored Williams cars finished eighth and ninth at last weekend's Grand Prix at Silverstone. Last week, Scotsman Andy Murray, also sponsored by RBS, was whipped by Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, while golfer Luke Donald, backed by the bank, was forced to pull out of the final round of the US Open in Torrey Pines in June. Sir Fred will no doubt be looking forward to the Open at Royal Birkdale later this month, where RBS is an official patron of the tournament itself, although No 1 ranked Tiger Woods will be absent due to his knee injury.
