EU fears of 'fishing trips' for bank data

US authorities could launch vast trawls of EU citizens' bank records, spending habits, travel history and other personal data under a draft agreement being negotiated with Brussels, civil liberties campaigners warned yesterday.

However, the European Commission's top negotiator said that the deal would guarantee fundamental rights and protect privacy.
