Dr Frederick Mulder, 64, is a leading UK art dealer. He was founding chairman of the Funding Network, the first public giving club in Britain. He won a Beacon Fellowship Judges' Special Prize in 2004 for his contribution to innovative philanthropy.

What was the first charity you supported? Greenpeace in 1985, after the Rainbow Warrior was sunk and a crew member killed by a French bomb. Greenpeace was a small organisation in the UK, and I offered to underwrite a newspaper advertising campaign. It taught me that one of the most interesting things you can do for a charity is to take a risk on their behalf that they themselves can't take.
