Venezuela says no to extension of Chávez's powers

Venezuela's opposition was yesterday celebrating its first big victory after knocking back President Hugo Chávez's efforts to make radical changes to the country's constitution.

Its 51-49 percentage point triumph in Sunday's referendum was the nationalist leader's first electoral defeat since coming to office in 1999 and occurred only a year after voters gave him another six years in the post.
