Fears grow that banks need extra capital

Denials by Bradford & Bingley of plans for an imminent rights issue come amid broader concerns being expressed among shareholders that other UK banks will need to raise capital in the coming weeks or months.

Since the credit squeeze began last August there has been the run on Northern Rock and its nationalisation, while in the US Bear Stearns has had to be rescued.
