Tokyo has strong incentive to ensure Shinsei rebounds

The problems just keep on popping up at Shinsei. First there was the consumer finance debacle. Having bought into the moneylending business, and decided consumer lending would be one of its pillars of growth, Shinsei found itself facing huge provisions against excess interest repayment claims.

Then came the subprime loan problem, which forced the bank to lower its earnings forecast late last year.
