The dust is settling on this month’s local elections in England and Wales, with an inevitable focus on the leadership abilities of those elected. It is often said that the most effective political message to an electorate is “time for a change” and in London this has seen a seasoned politician replaced by someone with charm and intelligence, but little hands on experience of government. So will Boris Johnson make a great mayor of London?

I consulted an expert, leadership methodologist Paul Bridle. He observed that most books on the subject are written by leaders themselves, so they may lack perspective. Bridle instead asked employees for their views on what made a successful leader.
