Abbot Group on Thursday confirmed it had received an approach which may “ultimately” lead to an offer being made for the Aberdeen-based oil-services company.

3i, the private equity firm, is understood to have made a 375p indicative offer valuing Abbot at about £870m. While a deal is not imminent, talks have moved well beyond the preliminary stage.
