Big notion lifts party’s sights from travails

Gordon Brown’s team refused to call it a relaunch. But the prime minister embarked on his most comprehensive effort to convince the sceptics he had a vision and the policies to back it up.

After weeks of self-inflicted wounds and Labour infighting, Mr Brown abandoned his familiar leaden rhetoric on global financial turbulence in an attempt to raise his party’s sights and to define what makes him tick as a ­politician.
