The Short View: Political uncertainty

The collective exhalation is almost audible. Credit and stock markets have recovered strongly since the market confronted its greatest fears in March, during the fire sale of Bear Stearns.

Two gauges of anxiety make this clear. The CBOE Vix index, which measures S&P 500 equity volatility, has halved since its high in January. It remains  44 per cent up from a year ago.
