Barack Obama is right when he says that the situation in Afghanistan is “precarious and urgent”. He is right too that Iraq has distracted attention from this and other important US foreign policy priorities; and he is right that commanders in Afghanistan could use more troops.

But the Democratic presidential candidate must be careful not to fall into the trap of many other outsiders who view Afghanistan purely through a military lens.
