Officers and not such gentle men

We are well served for cop series in the UK, and well served by the UK for cop series: some half-dozen home-produced, well-crafted police dramas are offered every week, the largest section in the “drama” category. They also vary greatly: we have both quantity and choice.

Choice dictates a spiral of competition, and these are vivid, emotive experiences that play fast and loose with themes of despair, cruelty, greed, hypocrisy and fear – and that’s just in the police stations. In the criminal world – insofar as it can be seen as distinct – there is an insistent examination of the nature of evil.
