Outside Edge: Iowa is more than just corn and churches

You would think the whole world knew Iowa by now. Because it casts the first presidential preference votes next Thursday, just about every candidate and political journalist has been camped there for months.

But reporters, with rare exceptions, now cover only candidates, and from inside the campaign cocoon of pollsters and strategists everything outside looks the same. The state becomes just a backdrop, its citizens visible only when shaking the candidate’s hand.
