The Short View: Selling stocks short

Investors are betting against the stock market in record numbers. Is that good news or bad news?

The statistics are clear. The New York Stock Exchange says 16bn NYSE-listed shares were sold short as of March 31. A year earlier, this number was 10.5bn. At the top of the last bull market in 2000, only about 4bn shares were sold short.
