Those of us riveted by the minutiae of transatlantic cultural distinctions can get very animated when it comes to patriotic symbolism. And there is nothing that sums up the differences quite so much as the anthems.

The American national anthem is sung (often hand-on-heart) before the most trivial of sports games, and woe betide the soloist whose cadences are too elaborate or innovative for local tastes.
