Pension schemes can use their existing methods of calculating pay when working out whether they will be exempt from placing employees into the new national pensions saving scheme from 2012, the pensions minister said on Wednesday.

The move follows heavy lobbying from a broad swathe of pension interests, which warned that proposals in the legislation, aimed at stopping rogue employers abusing the new system, could instead encourage good pension schemes to close.
