‘Ashamed’ Ban chides homeland over UN effort

Ban Ki-moon, the former South Korean foreign minister who is secretary-general of the United Nations, said on Friday he was “somewhat ashamed” that his country was not contributing more to UN aid programmes and peacekeeping operations during his first trip to his homeland since joining the UN in January 2007.

“My friends, Korea is not doing what it must,” Mr Ban told lawmakers and diplomats in the national assembly in Seoul.
