Ministers and their advisers will retain the right to see statistics before they are released, it emerged on Friday, dealing a potential blow to public trust in data.

The dangers of pre-release access were laid bare earlier this week when a number of newspapers ran stories about Thursday’s annual Home Office crime figures before they were published.
