From Mr Michael Charlton.

Sir, Charles Batchelor and Peter Thal Larsen's article "London's financial centre basks in its global appeal" (March 27) rightly makes the point that London's success is underpinned by the uniquely cosmopolitan nature of its workforce.

London's international competitiveness depends on being able to attract the best of the best regardless of where they come from. We have just carried out a study with Cranfield School of Management that provides more insight on why overseas nationals are keen to pursue their careers in London. The research examined the careers and career prospects of 350 executives from 40 countries. There was clear evidence that London is good for professional development, based on hard and soft factors.* Ninety per cent of executives said that working in London had benefited their career* Ninety-eight per cent felt they had developed a better understanding of global business since being in London* Nearly 60 per cent of foreign-born executives have been promoted during their time in London, and almost 80 per cent expect further promotion when they leave* Ninety per cent said their work motivation had increased, with the business culture in London highlighted as a contributory factor above and beyond its international rivals.

In fact what is clear is that London has spawned a new breed of ambitious and fulfilled global executives. To ensure that we capitalise on this success and are well positioned for the future, Think London opens its first overseas office in New York this week. The move is part of an international campaign to increase foreign direct investment into London, as advocated by Gordon Brown in last week's Budget.
