Reformers gain in Russia reshuffle

One of the most prominent liberals in the Russian government, finance minister Alexei Kudrin, was promoted last night to the role of deputy prime minister in a reshuffle seen as strengthening the position of government reformers.

Mr Kudrin not only retained his finance post in spite of rumours that he might be a casualty of the shake-up, but instead saw his status enhanced.
