At an industry dinner in January, Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Philip Green, two of the most entertaining sparring partners in the world of retail, were up for auction.

After a fairly miserable Christmas, the black-tie clad audience was more reticent than usual to dig deep for dinner with the bosses of Marks and Spencer and Top Shop. Suddenly, and unprompt­ed, Harold Tillman, owner of Jaeger, put himself forward as part of the package. With the further addition of Lord Coe, wine from the Rose cellar and transport to Paris on the Green jet, the lot eventually raised £60,000 for charity.
