Islamist candidates and those representing tribes made gains in Kuwait’s parliamentary elections, which many Kuwaitis hoped would herald an era of greater co-operation between the government and the national assembly to spur development in the oil-rich nation.
The poll was held on Saturday after Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Saba, the emir, dissolved parliament in March following the resignation of the cabinet amid complaints that parliamentarians were blocking the government’s work.
