Serbia went into Sunday’s parliamentary elections after the fall of an unstable coalition – and will probably emerge with another unstable coalition at the helm.

But the messy confusion of Belgrade politics should not obscure the significance of the results. Before the poll, it was widely feared the decision by the US and most of the European Union to recognise Kosovo could turn Serbia decisively against the west – to the benefit of the nationalist Radicals.
