The Bush administration’s attempt to rush through a stimulus package to prop up the deteriorating economy passed its first hurdle on Tuesday night when the House of Representatives approved a $146bn deal in a burst of bipartisan zeal.
The chamber – by an overwhelming majority of 385 to 35 – approved sending tax rebate cheques of up to $600 (£301) per person and $1,200 per married couple, plus an additional $300 for each child.
