Escaping higher energy bills became almost impossible on Friday after Scottish Power and Npower both announced increases to their gas and electricity prices. They were the last of the big six UK suppliers to do so.

Scottish Power, owned by Spanish energy group Iberdrola, said gas bills would go up by 34 per cent and electricity would rise by 9 per cent from Monday.
