Ambac rescue back from the brink

Last Thursday afternoon a series of frantic phone calls took place in Manhattan as the six-week race to prevent a rating cut at Ambac, the troubled bond insurer, teetered on the edge of collapse.

“We really thought the deal might not happen,” said one banker involved in the transaction.
