Brown accused of £6bn tax grab

Gordon Brown has raised taxes by £6bn a year since the 2005 general election, finally facing up to weaknesses in the public finances that could have been ­predicted, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said on Thursday.

The tightness of the government’s budget meant that the spending on refurbishment of schools announced by the chancellor in the pre-Budget report was not new money, added the respected think-tank.
