Honest Jon’s is a Ladbroke Grove record shop that set itself up as a record company in conjunction with the Essex-boy-turned-west-London-bohemian Damon Albarn. The Chop Up brought together the label’s stars for a fast-paced revue, halfway between a 90-minute Womad festival and an iPod on shuffle.

Honest Jon’s first release was the CD Mali Music: Albarn and friends jamming in Bamako. Many of the Malians were here. Kokanko Sata, one of the label’s better discoveries, played the kamelen ngoni, a three-stringed lute, and sang stridently. Afel Bocoum played Malian desert blues on an acoustic guitar, accompanied by a single-string fiddle. Lobi Traoré played gritty electric guitar. Toumani Diabaté, on kora, played one unshowy solo, and filled in behind other people.
