Pfizer and Merck, the biggest US drugmakers, have maintained dramatically opposing views on large acquisitions since the former embarked on the first of two big takeovers about eight years ago. But Merck’s view appears to be winning out.
Over that time, despite the third anniversary on Sunday of its withdrawal of painkiller Vioxx and associated litigation crisis, shares in Merck have performed better than Pfizer’s.
