Taiwan’s stock market and currency soared on Monday reflecting investor hopes that closer links with China, promised by a new president elected at the weekend, would give the island’s economy a much-needed boost.

The Taiwan Weighted index closed 4 per cent higher at 8865.35 points led by construction, tourism and financial stocks. The local currency took a jump to 30.255 to the US dollar, its highest level in more than a decade.
