Merkel backs Siemens over job cuts

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has backed Siemens, saying the 17,000 job cuts announced by the engineering giant last week may be needed to maintain its competitiveness.

Job cuts, she said in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag weekly on Sunday, “are sometimes unavoidable when competitiveness is at stake. Sometimes they are just necessary”.
