The euphemism that became a serious investing proposition

Recent tumult in the emerging markets invites the question: are they emerging or submerging markets?

The label “emerging markets” was coined by Antoine van Agtmael, then of the World Bank. At the time, it was widely perceived as a euphemism for “third world”. The “emerging” label made the ox carts, corruption and poverty more palatable to investors.
