US stocks ended the day in positive territory on Wednesday as investors responded to relatively benign inflation data and digested better-than-expected earnings reports from Macy’s and Freddie Mac.

Stocks moved steadily lower in the course of afternoon trade but all three leading indexes ended the day up.
