India opposition triumphs in state poll

India’s Hindu-nationalist main opposition party has won a key election in the home state of Bangalore, south Asia’s equivalent of Silicon Valley, extending a winning run ahead of a general election due by early next year.

The Bharatiya Janata party victory in Karnataka was its first outright win in a southern state and comes at a time when India’s Congress party-led ruling coalition, the United Progress Alliance, is struggling with rising inflation.
