Gordon Brown on Monday praised British troops after they mounted one of their biggest single assaults in years, helping to clear Taliban fighters from their largest stronghold in Afghanistan.

The prime minister, visiting the British Camp Bastion base in the restive southern province of Helmand, said victory in Musa Qala was “important for the whole mission in Afghanistan”.
