Hostage release boosts Colombian president

A mood of jubilation swept across Colombia on Thursday following the dramatic rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages from Farc guerrillas after more than six years in captivity.

Workers in Bogotá’s financial district threw white confetti on to the city’s streets, and at the Ministry of Defence headquarters seven rescued soldiers received a heroes’ welcome.
