German skills to boost S Africa

German companies in South Africa at the weekend launched an important training initiative to tackle the country’s skills shortages in advance of the football World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

The scheme, to provide engineering and services training to 50,000 unskilled young people working in World Cup-related jobs, is the largest such initiative linked to an international sporting event, organisers said.
